Matt Rife defends Sydney Sweeney against online troll
Sydney Sweeney faces criticism for ad campaigns, gets support from Matt Rife
Matt Rife is throwing his support behind Sydney Sweeney, who has been facing intense online criticism for her recent ad campaigns.
Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, has been at the center of controversy surrounding her bathwater-infused soap line with Dr Squatch and her American Eagle jeans ad.
The backlash began when Sweeney's American Eagle ad, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," sparked debate online, with some interpreting the campaign as promoting eugenics due to its reference to genes.
Despite the criticism, American Eagle stood by its campaign, stating it was "about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story."
The comedian took to social media to defend Sweeney, saying, "I keep seeing people mad at Sydney Sweeney for noooothing."
He added, "She’s learning that the internet is full of absolute garbage losers who will twist anything you say into a cunty misinterpretation people are awful."
Rife's comments come after he faced his own controversy surrounding his partnership with E.l.f. Cosmetics, which sparked backlash over his alleged past jokes about domestic violence.
In response to the criticism, E.l.f. Cosmetics released a statement, saying, "You know us, we’re always listening and we’ve heard you. This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty injustice. We understand we missed the mark with people we care about in our e.l.f. community. while e.l.f.ino & schmarnes closes today, we’ll continue to make the case against overpriced beauty."
The controversy surrounding Sweeney's ad campaigns comes as her new film, Americana, faced a disappointing opening week at the box office.
Despite this, Sweeney seems to be standing by her partnerships, recently sharing photos of herself wearing jeans on Instagram with the caption "duval diaries."
