Prince Harry, who has been desperately hoping for a reconciliation with King Charles, had found a window of opportunity to make amends.
In July, top aides of the Sussexes met with the monarch’s communication secretary in which Harry had extended an olive branch to his cancer-stricken father to finally end the years-long rift. Despite Harry’s significant gesture to share his diary engagements, there is still a lot of uncertainty around the peace deal.
As the Duke of Sussex is slated to return to the UK next month, a royal expert notes that the royal has a final chance to heal the rift albeit under a strict condition.
“There’s no doubt the feud between them is worse than ever, so much has happened and there has been so much betrayal and fury,” former royal editor Duncan Larcombe told The Mirror. “The longer they don’t speak, the deeper the feud will get.”
The expert stressed that Harry’s return in September might be the only time he could hold a meeting with the King which would slightly open the door for him and Meghan.
“From what I’ve heard, Harry is quite keen to see his father. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen. But him coming over to England is at least a chance for them to meet, and start the process of trying to build bridges.”
Harry has been a patron of the WellChild charity for the past 16 years and has not missed the award ceremony once. This year marks the 20th WellChild Awards, which will celebrate UK’s inspirational children and young people who are living with complex medical needs.
While the charity event brings Harry back to the UK, there is a strict condition which could manage a proper meeting with the King.
“It would have to be done in absolute private, behind closed doors, because there’s simply been too much played out in public, and that has to end if anything is to be repaired.”
