James Gunn’s Superman dominates global box office with 600 million record

James Gunn’s Superman reached a major milestone after becoming the first superhero film of 2025 to pass the 600 million mark worldwide. 

The film crossed the figure early Friday, ending Thursday with 599.6 million in earnings. Of that total, 343.6 million came from North America while 256 million was collected from international markets.

The achievement gave DC Studios a much-needed boost as the newly launched chapter under Gunn and Peter Safran continued to take shape.

Superman, directed by Gunn, marked the first release under their leadership and set the tone for the future of the brand after a series of underperforming titles in recent years. 

Previous releases such as The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle and Shazam Fury of the Gods failed to make an impact at the box office.

Despite its massive success, Superman arrived at a time when superhero films were facing difficulties. However, the wider genre continued to show signs of fatigue, with audiences less enthusiastic than before.

Even so, the movie stood out as the highest-grossing comic book adaptation of the year.

The film’s budget was reported to be at least 225 million before marketing, making its global earnings an important victory for DC.

The heroic flick also outperformed Marvel’s 2025 projects including The Fantastic Four First Steps, Thunderbolts and Captain America Brave New World, which struggled to hold audience attention after strong openings.

For the unversed, Superman became the first DC title to pass 600 million since The Batman in 2022 and the first within the DCEU to do so since Aquaman in 2018.
