'Jealous Type': Doja Cat’s new retro-style music video comes out
Doja Cat releases first single off her forthcoming album ‘Vie’
Doja Cat has officially marked her return with a brand-new single and music video that fans can’t stop talking about.
On Friday, Aug. 22, the 29-year-old star released Jealous Type, the first track from her upcoming album Vie, which is set to drop on Sept. 26.
The track arrived with a striking video directed by Boni Mata, pulling heavy inspiration from the '80s.
It opens with Doja watching herself on a projected film before coming face-to-face with another version of herself, all while singing about being the “jealous type.”
The visuals lean into bold imagery, from playful dance breaks in eye-catching outfits to scenes of retro-vibes, where she teases the camera with champagne, cherries, and even an ice cube.
Jealous Type serves as the introduction to Vie, which Doja has described as a deeply personal and love-centered project.
Speaking with V Magazine in July, she explained, “I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project. I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it’s popular.”
She went on to share that the album’s theme is rooted in romance and connection.
“Really just relationships in general, and relationships with yourself, even,” she said, clarifying that the songs reflect her own hopefulness in love.
“[Vie] is very much about love in a way that reflects how I want it to be in the future—my hope, my hopefulness. What I hope it could be.”
In a separate conversation with Apple Music, Doja revealed the thought behind the album’s title, noting that it poses one central question, “What is the point of life without love?”
Along with the new music, Doja also announced her first-ever tour across New Zealand, Australia, and Asia. The tour begins Nov. 18 in Auckland and concludes Dec. 21 in Kaohsiung, giving international fans the chance to see her new era live on stage.
Vie follows Doja’s 2023 album Scarlet and its deluxe edition released in May of last year.
With Jealous Type already setting the tone, the singer’s next chapter promises to be both vibrant and emotionally charged.
