Dua Lipa slammed by Belinda Carlisle over her explicit performances
Belinda Carlisle shares her thoughts on young women performances in the music industry
Dua Lipa has recently faced backlash by fellow singer Belinda Carlisle over her “sexualised” performances.
“These days, young women in the music industry are just so sexualised,” said the 66-year-old in a new interview with The i Paper.
Belinda, who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of all-female rock band Go-Go, mentioned, “I don’t get it. It’s not empowering – it’s embarrassing.”
Reflecting on young women performances, the Mad About You crooner explained that these young female singers “will get attention” but “not the right kind”.
Later, Belinda addressed Dua’s performance, saying, “It’s shocking! She’s so talented. She doesn’t need to do that.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Heaven is a Place on Earth singer, who has sold over seven million records worldwide as part of the Go-Go’s, admitted that her punk image saved her from misogyny early on in her career.
“No man ever messed with a Go-Go… We were like a five headed monster,” noted the singer-songwriter.
Meanwhile, Dua discussed sexism in the music industry in a previous interview with GQ magazine.
“For a female artist, it takes a lot more to be taken seriously if you're not sat down at a piano or with a guitar,” she stated.
