England fans celebrate across the UK as Lionesses have once again etched their names into football history by successfully defending their European crown with a thrilling 3-1 penalty shootout victory over world champions Spain in the Women’s Euro 2025 final.

The tournament was played in Switzerland from July 2 to July 27, 2025. This was the third edition since the tournament was expanded to 16 teams. The finale ended 1-1 after extra time before English footballer Chloe Kelly sealed the win with a decisive spot-kick, recreating her heroics from the 2022 final.

Overall, it was a nail-biting match as Spain scored first in the 25th minute when Ona Batlle’s pinpoint cross found Mariona Caldentey, who headed past England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. The England team equalized the score in the 57th minute with a powerful header from Kelly’s delivery.

Despite Spain’s relentless dominancy over the ball, England’s team persistently fought back through extra time, forcing penalties. The shootout again took a dramatic turn as Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll saved Beth Mead’s opening attempt.

But Hampton emerged as the hero, denying Caldentey and Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí to swing momentum England’s way. After Coll saved Leah Williamson’s effort, Spain substitute Salma Paralluelo missed her penalty, setting the stage for Kelly.

The Manchester City star, who scored the iconic winner in the 2022 final against Germany, stepped up and blasted her shot into the net, sparking wild celebrations as England retained their title.

The historic win of the team drew admiration across the nation including from the British Royal Family. King Charles III sent a heartfelt message to the team appreciating their team effort and skill.
