King Charles III took a clear stance on Canada amid threats as he delivered a bombshell speech to open parliament on Tuesday.

The 76-year-old, as Head of State, has officially opened Canada’s 45th Parliament amid US president’s threats to make the country ‘51st state’.

In his historic address, the King, without naming Trump, said Canadians can “give themselves far more than any foreign power on any continent can ever take away.

Charles is the first monarch since 1957 to preside over the opening of a new Canadian parliament.

The monarch, on his 20th visit, said: “The True North is indeed strong and free.”

King Charles III's office shared stunning pictures of the monarch on the royal family's official Instagram, highlighting the bold move amid tension from the US.

The Palace wrote: "The King, as Head of State, has officially opened Canada’s 45th Parliament."

The speech from the throne is typically given by the governor general and is meant to outline the government’s plans for the next session. The speech is written by the prime minister’s office in consultation with staff at the king’s office.

The King made no direct reference to Trump but his language was closely watched for implicit criticisms of the US president and his dramatic recasting of the US relationship with Canada.

“Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the Government is determined to protect,” said Charles

He said by “staying true to Canadian values”, the country could “build new alliances and a new economy that serves all Canadians”.
