Bella Ramsey opens up about autism diagnosis in a candid interview
Bella Ramsey has recently made shocking revelation about autism diagnosis.
The Last of Us star, who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, opened up about their diagnosis while filming the debut season of the hit HBO apocalyptic drama.
Speaking with British Vogue, the Game of Thrones actor said, “I’ve spoken a bit about neurodivergence before, but I always for some reason didn’t want to.”
“I got diagnosed with autism when I was filming season one of ‘The Last of Us,’” remarked the 21-year-old.
Bella recalled a member of the crew with an autistic daughter assumed they were autistic as well. This led to seek out a formal psychiatric assessment and diagnosis.
The Worst Witch actor described feeling like a “weirdo and a loner,” revealing “autism was something they had always wondered about”.
They told the outlet that the diagnosis was “freeing” because it “enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do”.
“I’ve always been watching and learning from people,” they continued.
Bella noted, “Having to learn more manually how to socialise and interact with the people around me has helped me with acting.”
The star also shared that being on set helped them set a daily routine, adding, “I have a call time, and I’m told what to wear, how to stand, where to stand and what to eat.”
“My experience of moving through the world is as an autistic person… There’s no reason for people not to know,” concluded Bella.
Meanwhile, Bella will next be seen in The Last of Us Season 2, which will premiere on April 13 on HBO.
