Eric Roberts is hoping to right some wrongs with his family, including sister Julia Roberts and estranged daughter Emma Roberts, with the help of his new memoir.
In his candid new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far, the Oscar-nominated actor, 68, opens up about the highs and lows of his decades-long career, addiction struggles, generational abuse, and a public apology to his famous sister, Julia Roberts.
Eric, the estranged father of actress Emma Roberts, delves deep into his troubled upbringing and reflects on his past, including his rocky relationship with Julia, 56, which has spanned more than four decades.
While Eric found early success in Hollywood, starring in films like King of the Gypsies and Runaway Train (which earned him an Oscar nomination), his career was marred by drug addiction and personal setbacks.
Reflecting on his past, Eric admits to damaging his relationship with his sisters, Julia and Lisa, stating, "I wouldn’t be surprised if they suffered from PTSD from when it was dangerous to be around me."
One of the more poignant moments in his memoir comes with a heartfelt apology to Julia. Eric writes, "I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said," referring to past comments where he claimed, "If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts."
Eric also touches on his lost custody battle over his daughter, Emma, which Julia supported. Despite the pain, he acknowledges Julia’s decision was the right one.
“I imagine I will remain as Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’ dad for the rest of my life,” he concludes, hoping to mend family ties.
