Biden says Supreme Court immunity to Trump 'terrible disservice'
"It's a dangerous precedent because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law," says Biden
President Joe Biden has stated that the US Supreme Court immunity provided to former president Donald Trump has set a "dangerous precedent" and is a "terrible disservice to" Americans.
Meanwhile, the Republican presidential candidate has hailed the decision as a "big win" for democracy, BBC reported.
The justices ruled on Monday that a president cannot be prosecuted for any action that is within his constitutional powers but can be for private acts.
The Democrat candidate reacting to the decision said: "This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Each and every one of us is equal before the law. No one is above the law. Not even the president of the United States."
He said the court's decision meant there were now virtually no limits on what a president could do.
"It's a dangerous precedent because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law," Biden said. "The only limits will be self-imposed by the president alone."
This is the first time Biden has spoken from the White House since his shaky presidential debate against Trump last week.
Ever since, many voters and Democrats have openly been questioning his ability to run the country.
