Liverpool clinch Premier League top with 3-1 win over Sheffield United
Liverpool's 3-1 win over Sheffield United sends them to top of Premier League
Liverpool went to the top of the Premier League after winning a thrilling match against Sheffield United on Thursday.
The Reds, not at their best, still managed to secure a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis MacAllister, and Cody Gakpo.
The first half saw Darwin Nunez capitalising on a blunder from Sheffield's goalkeeper, Ivo Grbic, putting Liverpool ahead. However, the Blades struck back after the break, with an own goal from Conor Bradley that levellied the score.
At one moment in a nail-biting second half, it seemed that Jurgen Klopp's title aspirations might be thrown off track. However, Mac Allister sent the ball soaring into the net, reigniting the hopes of Liverpool. Gakpo then hit a late header, ensuring Liverpool's victory. Now, Liverpool have the two-point lead in the Premier League.
This win pushed Liverpool ahead of Arsenal and reigning champions Manchester City in the points tally. They are not now sitting atop the Premier League table with 70 points from 30 games. The Liverpool win puts pressure on rivals Arsenal and Manchester City, who trail closely behind.
From the shock of the equaliser to the relief of the final goal, it was a night to remember. Despite the initial setback, Liverpool's determination shone through, securing them the much-needed win.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United languish at the bottom of the table, facing a daunting ten-point gap from safety. This win sets up a massive clash of Liverpool against rivals Manchester United next Sunday.
