Concerns regarding Kate Middleton's health surged when Prince William unexpectedly withdrew from attending King Constantine of Greece's memorial service on February 27.

This development intensified speculation about her well-being following her recent abdominal surgery.

Despite the palace's brief assurance that the 42-year-old Princess of Wales is "doing well" in her recovery, supplemented by a recent sighting during a car ride with her mother, Carole Middleton, insiders express frustration over the lack of comprehensive information.

One palace source characterized the situation as marked by "complete radio silence" regarding Middleton's condition.

Kensington Palace disclosed on January 17 that Middleton underwent a "planned" abdominal procedure the previous day, offering minimal details and emphasizing her desire for privacy regarding her medical information.

While the palace confirmed that the issue was non-cancerous, it stated that Middleton was not expected to resume public royal duties until after Easter.

"We made it clear from the beginning that the Princess of Wales would remain out of the public eye until after Easter, and Kensington Palace would only issue updates when significant," the spokesperson stated.

"She is unquestionably their MVP," comments royal historian Amanda Foreman  to PEOPLE in this week's cover story.

"In many respects, she embodies the spirit of the late Queen."

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith adds, "She holds a pivotal role within the monarchy and its future."
