Football legend Wayne Rooney, wife Coleen sign TV venture after 'The Real Wagatha Story'

Wayne Rooney, a former football player, and his spouse Coleen have signed an agreement with a production firm for their next television venture after the release of "The Real Wagatha Story".

It follows the triumphant premiere of "Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story", a documentary series that tracked her legal struggle in the High Court for defamation with the wife of another football player, Rebekah Vardy, which debuted on Disney+ last month.

In a similar vein, the full-length documentary, which follows the life of the former England and Manchester United captain, was also much praised when it debuted on Prime Video in 2022.

The pair reportedly "secured a deal" with Lorton Entertainment to work on their upcoming movie, which is scheduled for release in late 2024 or early 2025.

Julian Bird, founder and chief executive of the film and TV production company, said: “Lorton Entertainment is delighted to have agreed this deal with the Rooneys."

“Over the next three to four months, our focus will be on developing the many possibilities for the project."

“Although we have already been approached by a number of streaming companies, any scheduled release should not be expected until late 2024, or early 2025.”

It comes after Birmingham boss Rooney discussed his struggles as a young man to cope with the pressures of stardom on the latest podcast hosted by former rugby league great Rob Burrow.

The 38-year-old admitted to Burrow that, in his early 20s, drinking was how she let herself go. I would return home, stay there for a few days, and not leave the house. I would sip alcohol nearly to unconsciousness.

Rooney joined Manchester United at the age of 20, but he claimed that his prominence came at a price. At 16, he made his debut for Everton's senior team. At 17, he was selected for the England national team.
