DUBAI: Pakistan defeated West Indies in an interesting contest by 56 runs in the first day and night Test here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
Chasing a difficult target of 346, the West Indies were all out for 289 runs, with 12 overs left.
This was Pakistan’s 400th Test, a historic match, played with pink ball under flood lights.
However, they had to wait for the victory for almost all three sessions of the fifth and final day as the last man Shannon Gabriel was run out.
The main hurdle in their way was Darren Bravo, who defied Pakistan until the last hour of play with a fighting 116 and it needed a brilliant leaping catch by leg-spinner Yasir Shah to dismiss him after a 410-minute vigil.
Shah finished with 2-113, seven wickets in the match to dismiss West Indies for 289 in their second innings after resuming at 95-2. Mohammad Amir took 3-63.
Pakistan had made 579-3 declared in their first innings with Azhar Ali knocking an epic 302 not out.
Pakistan are leading 1-0 in the three-match Test series
The remaining two Tests will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 21-25) and Sharjah (October 30-November 3).
Brief scores:
Pakistan 579-3 declared and 123; West Indies 357 and 289.
