This refers to the letter, ‘Driving age’ (June 21) by Dr Khizar Azam Khan. The writer has advocated imposing an upper age restriction for issuing driving licences because of the slow response of senses with age to improve road safety.
The writer has not mentioned any statistics to prove senior citizen drivers as a major road safety hazard. Health problems can cause not only problems with our senses at any age but can also lead to hazardous driving. There are countless examples of sound drivers and pilots of over 80 years of age and successful field commanders over 60 years of age. Any criterion for issuing driving licences should be based on the analysis of road accidents and not on age.
