This refers to the article, ‘Redefining terrorism’ (March 18) by Basil Nabi Malik. The writer has touched one of the most sensitive issues in our country. Without going into academic debate, the fact remains that a personal guard of the Punjab governor killed him irrespective of the circumstances. No one has the right to take the law in his own hand and start killing people. Setting aside the conviction of Mumtaz Qadri under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorist Act, the court held that the investigation did not conclude that the murder was committed with the intent to create a sense of fear and insecurity within the society.
Do we need to hold seminars on such cases. Salmaan Taseer’s murder shook the entire diplomatic enclave. What more proof is needed? No proof is required in cases when an accused accepts his guilt. We have to revisit the anomalies in the judicial system and remove them. The government should waste no time and file an appeal so that the case is brought to its logical conclusion. Such high-profile cases should otherwise be decided in days instead of lingering them on for years.
