ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has cancelled his scheduled visit to Afghanistan apparently because of some ‘technical fault’ in Jahangir Tareen’s plane.
However, Naeemul Haq, PTI’s central secretary information confided to The News that the visit was cancelled not because of the ‘fault’ but because of the important proceeding of the Judicial Commission.
A well-placed source in the party informed The News on condition of anonymity that the two-day visit on the invitation of Afghan chief executive Abdullah Abdullah was scheduled for June 17.
A bird hit Mr. Tareen’s plane while it was landing at the Lahore airport on June 16 rendering the plane technically unfit to fly due to which Imran Khan had to cancel his official visit to Afghanistan.
The agenda of the meeting between PTI chief and Afghan leadership was how to strengthen Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. The issue of Afghan migrants in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which is a matter of concern for the PTI-led government in the province, was also to be discussed. Moreover the delegation headed by Imran Khan included former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was scheduled to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. When contacted PTI’s central information secretary Naeemul Haq said Imran Khan’s Afghanistan visit was cancelled on the request of Mr. Abdul Hafeez Pirzada as the Inquiry Commission’s proceedings are in crucial phase.
The testimonies of Returning Officers before the Inquiry Commission were very important and Mr. Pirzada asked Imran Khan to postpone his Afghanistan visit and attend commission’s meeting.
