The horrific memories of the Baldia factory fire still haunt us. The 258 ill-fated people were burned alive when the fire broke out. While the incident happened almost six years ago, it is unfortunate that the higher authorities have not taken the necessary measures to avert such untoward incidents in the future. In a recent news conference held by the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF), members have urged the government to ban the use of asbestos across industry.
The element poses great health risks and can cause serious diseases including lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. The three principles – serviceability, quality and safety –must be ensured in every factory building. Inspection agencies across Pakistan should be tasked to check the working conditions of factories. In Pakistan, there is a pressing need to look for safe material that can be replaced with deadly asbestos. Due to its adverse effects on health of workers, the higher authorities must ban its use in order to provide safety to workers.
