Payment to labourers through banks: Action initiated against industrial units for not following rules

PESHAWAR: On the directives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary, the Labour Department has initiated legal action against the industrial units, which had violated the government rules for provision of minimum wages through scheduled banks to the labourers.

An official communique said the Labour Department, through its inspectors, had started a campaign in the province against various industrial units for ensuring compliance on the directives of the provincial government wherein all the employers were made bound to provide minimum wages of Rs15000/- to each labourer through scheduled bank accounts. The Labour Department had inspected 650 industrial units in various parts of the province wherein 34 units were found non-functional while 364 units were paying wages to their servants through various scheduled banks.

The inspectors also that reported 252 industrial units whose managements were violating the standing instructions of the provincial government on the minimum wages. The Labour Department registered cases against the owners and managers of 252 industrial units and sent their challans to different labour courts. One hundred and thirty-three cases were registered against the industrial units in Peshawar, 55 in Mardan and 18 in Swat district.
