While the provincial and local governments’ failures ensured that the recent downpour in Karachi was a bane for almost all of the city’s inhabitants, residents of Millat Town, Korangi, faced a particularly terrifying situation as a defectively constructed residential street in the area caved in on Friday, Geo News reported.
Fortunately, most of the houses on either side of the street did not suffer any major harm, except for a couple that were damaged by the electric poles that tipped over when the ground gave way.
Area residents said the street had been submerged with accumulated rainwater ever since the start of the pre-monsoon rain spell in Karachi on Wednesday.
They claimed their calls to local administration officials went unanswered and the submerged road eventually caved in on Friday morning.
The residents’ worries were compounded by a fear of electrocution as power poles installed in the lane toppled over and wires snapped when the road gave in.
The affected citizens said they had not been advised by any official on whether they should evacuate their homes or take any other precautionary measures.
