Strict legal action to be taken against overloaded vehicles
The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP), South Zone, convened a meeting with transporters’ representatives at the zonal office in Karachi. The meeting was chaired by DIG Motorway Police, South Zone, Asghar Ali Yousafzai, and was attended by delegations from the goods transporters, oil tankers and dumpers associations.
According to NHMP South Zone spokesman Sub-Inspector Qaiser Niazi, the primary objective of the meeting was to devise a mutually agreed upon strategy to eliminate overloading, and to ensure the preservation of valuable highways with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
DIG Yousafzai said that overloading is causing significant damage to roads, placing an additional financial burden on the national exchequer. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against vehicles exceeding the prescribed weight limits.
He urged all transporters to ensure complete compliance with the law, and ensure that drivers possess valid licences, fitness certificates and route permits. “The transporters’ community must play a positive role in safeguarding the country’s assets.”
He also listened to the transporters’ issues, and assured them that their concerns would be conveyed to the higher authorities. The spokesman said that everyone who attended the meeting expressed their commitment to cooperating for the preservation of the highways and for putting an end to overloading.
