This letter refers to the news reports ‘PM forms panel to cut size of federal government’ (July 7, 2024) and ‘Slashing bloated bureaucracy a real challenge for Shehbaz’ (July 7, 2024). It is heartening to note that action along these lines is being mulled.
It does not take an Einstein to decipher that a decrease in expenditures is as important as an increase in revenue, through taxes, if the real aim is to reduce the deficit. There is also a need to cut down on the perks and privileges of the bureaucracy which are paid for by the taxpayers.
