Philanthropy vs misanthropy

It seems two sets of curriculum are governing the way we view life in the world – philanthropic and misanthropic. The former proselytises love, peace, patience, generosity, harmony and tolerance, while the latter preaches violence, hatred, extremism, obscurantism, fundamentalism and bigotry. The moot point is that the latter category is metastasising at an alarming rate, particularly in our society, for the last over two decades. We need to identify grey areas where philanthropy is losing its grip and ground.

One can generalise that the preachers of misanthropy are much more motivated, dedicated and well-equipped than philanthropists. That means philanthropists must revise, revisit and revamp their techniques and methods. They should promote a culture of tolerance and patience. Violence at all levels, including at homes, schools, colleges and social gatherings, should be discouraged and culled. The media can play a pivotal role in this regard. A change emanating from the grassroots level will be more enduring and long-lasting.
