Police are searching for the man who allegedly set his stepdaughter on fire in the Landhi area. An eight-year-old girl, Wania, was set on fire with petrol in Landhi Sector 36-B on February 16. Police said her stepfather Tariq was responsible for setting her on fire, as a result of which over 25 per cent of her body was burnt.

According to police, the girl's mother concealed the matter from the police due to the fear of her husband. Since the incident, she had been taking the minor girl to various hospitals. Including both public and private health facilities, to get her burn injuries treated.

“I got married two years ago to a person named Tariq, with whom I have a son,” the mother said, adding that she also had an eight-year-old daughter from her former husband Amjad who lived with her.

The mother narrated in the FIR that on February 16, when her daughter returned home from tuition, Tariq started beating her. “When I tried to save the girl, my husband, in anger, started beating me too and then set fire to my daughter with petrol.”

“I managed to take the girl to a hospital with great difficulty and now my husband is threatening to kill me,” the woman said. The Landhi police have registered a case against Tariq on his wife’s complaint. Police said they had initiated search for the suspect.
