Airlines in Pakistan unlikely to slash fares
LAHORE: The prospects of a sharp decline in airline fares in Pakistan are not bright due to the monopoly of a few players and limited international flight operations, said Abdul Jabbar from Reliance Travel, Karachi.
“If a Pakistani traveler has to go to the USA, Australia, Africa, Europe or any other country, he is bound to travel mostly on 5 to 6 airlines, including Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Turkish and Thai. In the absence of competition, expectation of reduction in airfares is not possible,” added Abdul Jabbar. If PIA runs its flight operation with a strong fleet in those countries where it has traffic rights, it can provide facilities to travellers, he asserted.
Abdul Jabbar said a strong government attracts investors through its sound policies. He said inflation is a burning issue in Pakistan, which will affect the spending on travel. Besides, costs incurred on hotels, luggage and transportation will also influence the option to travel, he added.
If the value of Pakistani rupee depreciates, it will also add to the travel cost, said Abdul Jabbar, adding when there is peace and stability in the country, it boosts people’s confidence
