Ebola relief: WHO chief hails five recoveries as new treatment center opens in eastern Congo
The World Health Organization has praised early Ebola patient recoveries and ongoing outbreak response efforts, with global cases previously rising to 1000
In a new wave of relief, the World Health Organization (WHO) hails the recovery of Ebola patients after more than 220 people are suspected to have died from the disease’s latest outbreak, which was declared two weeks ago.
WHO announced the recovery of five people infected with a rare strain of Ebola for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment, amid the latest outbreak of the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to the WHO, the strain, known as Bundibugyo, kills up to 50 percent of those infected, and the latest Ebola outbreak is the DRC’s 17th.
Previously, global cases rising to 1000 showed that the situation had reached an alarming level before these recovery and response efforts were initiated.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Sunday that four people would soon be discharged from hospital after another patient was allowed to return home on Friday.
WHO acknowledged and praised positive developments in the response to the Ebola outbreak, such as the early recovery of patients who had been infected with the virus, which suggests that treatment and medical care are showing encouraging results.
And at the same time, the health institute is also highlighting ongoing efforts to control and manage the outbreak, which include measures such as improved treatment facilities and coordinated public health responses aimed at reducing the spread of the disease.
Additionally, the new recovery center is a great relief, as there was no vaccination or treatment available for the deadly Ebola outbreak.
