PESHAWAR: As many as 243 attacks were carried out on police force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the current year, with 46 happening alone in Dera Ismail Khan district.
According to the statistics collected by the Counter-Terrorism Department, after DI Khan most attacks on police, 37, were reported in Peshawar and 31 in Khyber district during the current year.
Over 100 policemen were martyred alone in Peshawar district. As many as 74 policemen lost lives in other districts of the province during 2023.
Besides, 51 soldiers of Pakistan army, 39 of Frontier Corps, 10 personnel of other forces and 144 civilians were also martyred during the year.
As far as attacks on police are concerned, Abbottabad, Torghar, Orakzai and Malakand districts remained the most peaceful where no incident was reported during 2023. Like Dera Ismail Khan, many other districts in southern KP recorded higher number of attacks on police during the year.
At least 12 incidents were reported in Bannu, 26 in Lakki Marwat, 20 in Tank, eight in North Waziristan, two in South Waziristan, two in Hangu, one in karak and seven attacks on police force were reported in Kohat during the period.
Among the other districts, 20 attacks on police were reported in Mardan, six in Charsadda, two in Buner, one in Haripur, three in Dir Lower and one attack happened in Dir Upper.
Also, a total of 401 policemen were injured in these attacks out of which 244 were in Peshawar.
Over all, 563 terror incidents were reported with 86 happening alone in Dera Ismail Khan, followed by 78 in North Waziristan, 72 in Khyber, 52 in Peshawar, 51 in Tank, 48 in South Waziristan, 36 in Bannu, 33 in Bajaur, 31 in Lakki Marwat and 12 in Mardan in 2023.
The situation in southern districts remained the worst that reported the highest number of attacks throughout the year.
