SWABI: Speakers at a gathering here on Wednesday called for steps to prevent violence against women.
They were speaking at an event in the Women University Swabi. They said that it was important to respect one’s daughter’s choices about education, career and marriage. Lt-Gen (Retired) Nigar Joher, who belongs to Swabi district, was the chief guest at the gathering organized by a civil society organization against gender-based violence against the women.
The orgainsers said that the gathering was aimed at preventing violence against women particularly young girls and encouraging all those who were continuing unabated struggle for their emancipation and enabling them to fight for their rights from a strong position.
The participants said that the womenfolk should be encouraged to play their due role in the progress and prosperity of the country and contribute to the betterment of the society.
Nigar Joher said that this was the responsibility of the government to provide equal opportunities to girls for acquiring education. He lamented that the girls in various regions of the country were still deprived of facilities. A drama was also presented by the university students. Stalls were set up at the gathering.
