Teenage maid set on fire in North Cantt
LAHORE:In another horrifying incident of domestic worker abuse, a teenage maid suffered burn injuries when her employer allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire in the North Cantonment area. Shabnum, the victim, had been working for Nauman’s family for a couple of years, enduring reported mistreatment.
The abuse escalated when Nauman’s wife, dealing with her own frustrations, verbally and physically attacked Shabnum during a dispute. In a fit of rage, the employer threw a bottle filled with petrol on the girl and ignited it while she was taking a bath. Shabnum sustained burn injuries and has been admitted to Mayo Hospital. The prime suspect has been arrested following intervention by the SP Cantonment.
Self-immolation attempt
A mentally disturbed individual, identified as Badarul Zaman, reportedly attempted self-immolation in Mughalpura on Wednesday due to personal reasons.
Struggling with frustrations, Zaman locked himself in a room, attempting to set furniture and himself on fire. Rescue-1122 and firefighters responded promptly, extinguishing the flames and rescuing the victim. Zaman’s mother cited financial constraints, expressing their inability to afford his expensive treatment.
Body found
A sack containing the bullet-riddled body of a 25-year-old man, Shahrukh alias Pomi, was found in Nishter Colony. Passersby alerted the police, and senior officers initiated an investigation, collecting forensic evidence and recording eyewitness statements. Shahrukh, a resident of DG Khan, was living with his aunt in Shama Colony.
Arrest made in harassment case at Model Town Park
A woman, Aima, who recently returned from the UK, was harassed in Model Town Park on Wednesday. The suspect, Usama, was apprehended by the police after Aima reported the incident. SP Irtaza Kumail emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for those harassing women and stated that the suspect had been handed over to investigations police.
Road accidents in Punjab
Over the last 24 hours, nine people lost their lives, and 1,216 were injured in 1,132 road accidents across all districts of Punjab. Of the injured, 556 with serious injuries were transported to hospitals, while 660 with minor injuries were treated at the accident sites by Rescue medical teams. Motorbikes were involved in the majority (74%) of accidents. Lahore topped the list with 253 reported accidents, followed by Faisalabad with 91 and Gujranwala with 63. The data revealed that 984 males and 241 females were among the victims, with 155 under 18 years, 697 between 18 and 40 years, and 373 above 40 years. The accidents involved various vehicles, including motorbikes, auto-rickshaws, motorcars, vans, passenger buses, trucks, and other types of vehicles and slow-moving carts.
