One day at a time (2017-2020)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

This comedy-drama on Netflix is inspired by Norman Lear’s 1975 series of the same name. This time around, the family-oriented series follows the life of Penelope (Justina Machado), a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life. Now a nurse, Penelope is raising two strong-willed children (Marcel Ruiz and Isabella Gomez). When faced with challenges, Penelope turns to her ‘old-school’ mother (Rita Moreno), and her building manager, who has become an invaluable confidant. The series offers a contemporary take on what life looks like in both good and bad times, and how loved ones can help make it all worthwhile. If you’re a mother, watching this sweet series with your mom will give you both a good laugh.

Schitt’s Creek (2015 -2020)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

If you and your mom haven’t already watched this award-winning series, it’s about time you caught up with the fabulously funny Roses. While plenty of focus has been on real-life father and son Eugene and Dan Levy playing a down-on-their-luck father and son, watching the relationship blossom between Moira Rose and her daughter Alexis (played by Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy) will definitely be a Mother’s Day highlight.

Schitt’s Creek, in all its simplicity, feels like the haven we all need right now. This show is a symbol of love, hope and inclusivity which will surely be a treat for you and your mom to bond over.

Otherhood (2019)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

Otherhood is emphatically about Mother’s Day and it’s about time this day got its own movie! Based on the novel, ‘Whatever Makes You Happy’, this Felicity Huffman and Angela Bassett production is pure fluff in a good way. The movie follows three suburban moms who are somewhat estranged from their adult sons. On Mother’s Day, they decide to show up at their sons’ Manhattan apartments to repair their maternal relationships. This phase of motherhood gets little to no attention in media, so Otherhood is a good one to add to your list. The movie offers some drama, angst amidst some comic relief.

Dumplin’ (2018)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

Set to the music of Dolly Parton, the queen of country genre, Dumplin’ follows a former beauty-queen mother (Jennifer Aniston) and her anti-pageant daughter, Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald). Willowdean, who struggles with her weight and body image, feels unable to connect to her mother after the passing of her beloved aunt and primary caretaker. The film follows her journey of empowerment and grief, as well as her efforts to navigate the long shadow cast by her mother in her small Texas town. This movie is all about self-acceptance, a mother-daughter relationship, and some classic teenage drama: What’s not to love? Whether your relationship is sometimes strained or you’re the best of friends, this sweet movie might help you appreciate it even more.

Tully (2018)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

Having a kid is hard. Having three kids - one of whom is a newborn baby - isn’t just three times harder. The challenges increase exponentially to the point of surrealism, a sensation writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman nail with their latest comic movie, Tully.

Modern mom often feel like they need to be superheroes and do it all with a smile. Starring Charlize Theron as Marlo is a mother of three who is just on the edge trying to keep a balance with her children and her home single-handedly, while her husband has to be away for work. Enter Tully (Mackenzie Davis), the night nurse Marlo’s wealthy, smug brother (Mark Duplass) has offered to hire as a gift to her. At first, Marlo is offended at the suggestion that she can’t mother her children on her own, but she gives in once the delirium of sleep deprivation takes its toll. The movie is about a mother who learns to accept the help of a nanny, is a reminder that sometimes it does take a village, and that’s okay.

Lady Bird (2017)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

Oscar –nominated and with two Golden Globes, Lady Bird is a coming-of-age film starring the Saoirse Ronan as Christine (or Lady Bird) and it’s as funny, smart, and filled with yearning as its heroine. Christine is a senior in high school who is going through the ups and downs of being a teenager. Played by Laurie Metcalf, the mother is a nurse who works tirelessly to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job. She also maintains a turbulent bond with Christine who is just like her: loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated. If you’re a mother with a daughter or a daughter with a mother, you will feel so seen by this movie. This movie will make you cackle and cry, especially if you’re navigating a relationship with your mother/daughter who might be just a little too much like you.

Brave (2012)

MOVIE MARATHON WITH MUMMY!

Even if you have seen this already, this is the perfect time to rewatch this movie with your momma! Bursting with heart, unforgettable characters and Pixar’s signature humour, Brave is incredible entertainment for the whole family.
