Resolution

As the New Year begins, we tend to make a list of resolutions that we assume will change our lives. Unfortunately not everything always goes as planned and most of the resolutions fall apart as soon as the year takes off. Why you ask? It is because such is the journey of life that keeps introducing obstacles into our lives. Read on to find out interesting confessions of people whose resolutions went wrong in 2015!

Cooking disaster Amna, 23 years old

Last year I made a resolution that I would learn how to cook. The inspiration behind this idea came from my close friends who were taking cooking classes and had mastered the art. I would feel left out whenever they would talk about the dishes they made, hence trying my hand at cooking, was a move to fit in within my friends circle. So as the New Year started, I invited my friends to a dinner stating that I would be the chef of the night. They seemed impressed yet amused and found it hard to believe that I could cook. But I convinced them of my talent and said that the dinner at my place would be something they would remember for a lifetime. After all, how hard could cooking be? All I had to do was read the recipe and follow the instructions. So I bought a cook book a day before the dinner and read all the instructions. Everything seemed so easy that I decided to make karhai, Chinese rice and fish. So, I woke up early the next day and headed straight to the kitchen. However, the instructions from the cook book were really hard to follow in reality and I ended up adding too much salt in the dishes. The taste was so bad that one of my friend’s even choked on the food. One of them even said that they would remember the night for ‘a lifetime’. I was so embarrassed that I swore never to cook for anyone again.

Art of procrastination Rabbiya, 25 years old

People like to make resolutions and then say, “I’ll start that tomorrow or next week.” But the fact is, if you aren’t doing it today, you aren’t going to do it tomorrow either. This has been the case with me since I turned 22. My resolution since then has been to read novels because I have avoided books throughout my life. What can I say, I always found it boring to sit in one place and read for hours. So, I make this resolution every year and now it has been three years since I have failed to make any progress. Every day I think, I will read a book tomorrow but it just doesn’t happen. So much for resolutions!

‘I’m going vegetarian’ Aliya, 22 years old

Last year, I decided to become vegetarian in order to take a stand for animal rights. For a month, I campaigned and urged everyone on my Facebook list to become vegetarian. I even fought and argued with many and told them that they are weak and pathetic if they aren’t able to let go of eating meat. However, after a month my passion just deflated and I began to eat meat. Don’t judge me, I just really missed eating tikkas, pizzas and steaks and found the vegetarian diet to be extremely boring. So I decided to let to ‘no meat’ resolve go. But all the people I had taunted for not being vegetarians had not forgotten a thing I had said to them during my vegetarian phase and lashed out at me when they saw me eat meat. People still call me a fake animal rights activist just because I broke a promise I had made.

Charitable me Quratulain, 20 years old

Last year I made a resolution that I would give more charity in order to be a better person. Also, everyone says that God blesses you with more money once you give in His name. Unfortunately, the opposite happened to me when I gave 4000/ to my driver who kept telling me he needed money to buy a pair of shoes he had his eyes on. After I gave him the money, I ended using half of my leftover salary on shopping. I was still calm though as I had 5000/ left and I felt I could make it last for two more weeks. Unfortunately, I ended up dropping that amount somewhere by mistake and did not even have a single penny left in my purse after that. To top that off, my phone got stolen at gun point and I had to wait three more weeks before I had any money to use. This resolution caused me to become bankrupt. This year my resolution is to save money and allot only a specific amount to charity every month so I don’t end up being the one in need.

Diet away Saadia, 25 years old

A few years back I made a resolution to go on a diet to lose weight. I made a proper plan and jotted everything out on a journal. I kept track of everything and was sure that I would accomplish this resolution. How was I to know that dieting would be so harmful for me? Within a month I became sick and was hospitalized. I couldn’t eat, sleep or have fun at all. My resolution completely backfired!

I quit! Faryal, 28 years old

I had been smoking for years and last year I decided to quit as a New Year’s resolution. The first three days were painful as I kept craving for a smoke but things got better for a day or two after that. Little did I know that quitting smoking is not a cup of tea and it can severely affect your mental health. After quitting I became cranky and started to initiate fights with everyone around me. My friends got so sick of my cigarette free attitude that they asked me to start smoking again. Well, their support was all I needed and I went back to smoking. Such a failed resolution!
