This week Karachi based makeup artist Kiran Khan shares the best makeup tips and trends for this Eid...
Ace makeup artist Kiran Khan delved into makeup in 2005 and since then, her love for makeup kept growing till it became her passion. In 2014 Kiran Khan opened her signature salon - Kiran Khan Makeup & Hair. It’s been four successful years now in the beauty industry since this makeup guru has turned heads left, right and centre.
Kiran tells that her passion has only driven her towards the field. “I had a passion of doing makeup which is what drove me into learning more and more each day. I learned makeup by practicing on myself and on literally anyone I could get my hands on.
Even if I was self-taught, I made sure to learn and read up on all the basics, techniques and information that a professional makeup course would provide me,” shares Kiran.
She discovered makeup as her favourite medium to express her art. It allows her to be creative and work with ‘talking canvases’. There’s a true art to knowing the best colour, product or technique to highlight a client’s best features. Interestingly, Kiran is best known for doing the same, i.e. a 100 watt radiant skin while keeping it natural and enhancing the features.
Recently, she was trained by celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, who is Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist. He is the king of contour and highlight, also famous for giving natural looks with a glam factor to his clients from J-LO, Eva Longoria, and the entire Kardashian family including Khloe, Kylie and Kendall Jenner among others.
Last month, Kiran Khan concluded her three-day Masterclass in which she talked about skin care, what to buy, what not to buy, what to toss and what to save from your makeup collection. With much on her plate right now, You! took her on-board to get to know about the recent trends to follow this Eid...
Eid this time will be in summers, that means it’s going to be super hot and humid. We asked the artist how to go about it without doing extra to our Eid look this year and she tells, “Keep it as minimal as possible. Try skipping foundations and use heavy coverage concealers where needed and blend out the rest. Make sure you get a breathable skin through the day. Use powders and set them well to avoid creasing and oiliness to appear on the face. Most importantly, keep blotting papers with yourself all the time. For lips and cheek, use tints for their great staying power because sweating will cause your makeup to melt and rub off. Use lighter colours in the day and even at night. But if you want to add a boost to your look, do a bold lip colour only for night time parties.”
The basis for any makeup is a good skin regimen. As Kiran Khan is quite keen on giving her clients a proper prep up time before starting makeup, she emphasises, “Each skin is prepped differently depending on their skin type. But in any case, I never skip moisturising any type of skin. However, each skin care routine is supposed to be done according to different types. But if someone is confused, just focus on the basics, which are cleanser, toner and moisturiser.” While talking about what foundation suits the best to people, Kiran reveals, “I custom mix my foundations for everyone. I mix and match to achieve the perfect shade, undertone, texture and finish. To avoid having your foundation slip off, just make sure you set it properly with a translucent powder. Setting is key to make sure all the efforts you’ve done last longer.”
While we spot a lot of nude and berry lips on the runway, this is not the case when it comes to festivals in summer season. When asked what lipstick shades are in this Eid, Khan supports the use of earthy and neutral tones. “It depends on people’s choice basically. But keeping in mind the on-going trend, neutral shades are a way to go.” Another tip that she shares in her Masterclass is the versatility of a humble lipstick. “A lipstick can be used in many ways. You can use it on the lips as base, on cheeks as a stain and on eyes as a cream eye shadow base.”
We often hurry while getting ready on Eid and sometimes there are many spontaneous plans for which we have to work fast. For this Kiran suggests, “I actually do my everyday makeup in five minutes. I use a concealer and blend it out. Set it with a powder. Do my brows, curl my lashes and put mascara. I use a tint or a soft lipstick. If I have another 30 seconds, I do blush as well. I can’t work without heavy concealers and translucent powders! I just can’t, even if I am running late.”
Women often end up over doing their look when they are getting ready for a special day. Keeping this in mind, Kiran Khan has some useful tips to offer in this regard. “Everyone has their own style, I guess. But I feel my biggest pet peeve is when people don’t match their foundations well. With this, they usually go lighter with the shade and end up looking grey.”
Another thing that she mentions is to do what works best for you specifically. “On a big occasion like Eid, women follow a trend blindly not knowing if it suits them or not, which can make them look unflattering. If I do something and I personally don’t like it, I would remove it all and start from the beginning. I don’t finalise the look until I am completely satisfied with it,” she concludes.
