This week, You! talks to Saeeda Mandviwalla, CEO Toni&Guy, regarding her solo hair show - ‘Global Hair Trends 2018’ - held recently in Karachi...

Acelebrated stylist, beautician and entrepreneur, Saeeda Mandviwalla needs no introduction. Recently, in an exclusive hair show, Saeeda brought hair stylists of international fame to Karachi and gave a select audience a memorable show in the serene environs of Acton House.

This was Saeeda’s first solo show. Excited yet apprehensive is how Saeeda felt, as a solo hair show means your reputation depends on many things that one did not have to worry about previously. Icing on the cake was the involvement of foreign crew including Gary France and Max Lamparter. “It’s always inspiring to get a team from London to work on a hair showcase. Gary and Max’s trip was a great contribution not only to the show but also to staff training on haircuts, styling and products that we use. We did live demos, which went digital instantly and this really created a buzz. Gary has been at Toni&Guy for 29 years so there is a lot of experience that comes with him and Max has been with the company for 14 years so these guys are seasoned stylists and know how to create magic,” says Saeeda.

The look:

Whatever your hair length is, this season’s look is ‘sexy and dishevelled’ rather than smooth and tailored - an unstructured look that’s easy for even the most heavy-handed of us to achieve.”

If you have short hair, forget about careful blow-drying - Saeeda suggests using a moulding wax or hair texturiser to add a messy, wavy done undone texture to your look.

“You should be able to use the product without it looking like a lot of product is used on the hair. Play around with your style, separating sections until you have got the look you want. If you have natural curls or texture don’t just wear them, flaunt them. One of the biggest hair moments of this year will be voluminous curls,” defines Saeeda.

The show:

The Hair show was divided into four segments. The first segment looks were called ‘Futurewise’. This was a collection of bold cuts and vibrant colours that depict the future of hair looks. These looks focused on the strength of women to express their style statement.

The second collection was a timeless classic black and white collection called ‘We Are Two’; this showcased a variety of textures and finishes for the hair, celebrating the diversity and culture of Toni&Guy clients worldwide.

The third segment featured men’s hair trends for 2018. It showcased fades, men’s fringes with texture, and faded with urban chic gents look, and men’s long hair. So, we have covered all of the looks for men in this segment.

‘Fashion Fix’ was the final segment, which was quick dry styling that can be from intricate braids and smooth glamorous knots to high fashion ponytails. Fashion fix is a pioneering hair concept of bringing the latest ‘London Fashion Week’ trend looks to Pakistan. This also featured the new collection of ‘Label.m’ hair accessories, which adds a glamorous touch to all the styles - party friendly and very wearable.

Behind the stage:

When asked about her favourite look, Saeeda interjects, “I actually loved all the looks and working on all of them gave me a huge high, but my favourite was Amina Ilyas’ curly look. This really was a first time for Amina and she rocked her curls. This look is from the ‘We Are Two’ campaign, and the model’s name is Ella-Rae.”

The curls ‘let loose’ were moisturised with radiance oil from the ‘Label.m’ therapy range and curl cream which Saeeda used and locked this in for definition. “I then used my fingers for separation. Amina carried herself with strength and poise and really flaunted her curls on the catwalk,” says the enthusiastic Saeeda.

The placement of colours as seen on the models was interlocking curves of colour. “We gave depths of bright violets to create multi tones of light and dark. Halos of colour were used by block colouring and drifting.” The colour palette was citrus interspersed with shades of orange and copper-golds as seen in UK Vogue magazine for Spring Summer 2018.

“We used a teal blue that had a slightly pigmented shade of blue and black. These tones are seen as colour melting and we used a teardrop section in the front of the face and left the rest of the hair darker and deeper. The technical term for this is ‘teardrop’.

One of the colour palettes that we used was like an oxidised metal and mineral. This technique incorporates a tonal overlay with pre-colour techniques that looked amazing on the models’ wheatish skin tone. A variety of bold colours were used in our ‘Futurewise’ collection,” elaborates the expert.

Hair accessories & colours:

As for hair accessories that we saw on the runway, they were from ‘Label.m’ accessories collection, recently launched, inspired by the latest fashion trends. From glittering jewels to floral barrettes, add sparkle and drama to your look this season.

As for the latest in hair colour, this season the combination of brown and light pink has been one of the trendiest hues. “This is a great way for brunettes to get a modern take on the old hair colour, this multi-hue look is bold without being too intense,” shares Saeeda.

“The ultra-vibrant punk colours like violet and tangy oranges, are also big this year as seen in our show, moreover, combinations of blonde and bronze on dark hair is great for dimension and richness throughout the hair and also adds volume,” adds Saeeda.

Never rest on one’s laurels

Talking about her future endeavours Saeeda says, “I am going to our London academy for the ‘Label m’. creative ambassador and Toni&Guy advanced training. I will then take a team of staff for training to London in July. We are looking forward to bringing educators to Pakistan from London like we just did for our showcase, and planning for another show in 2019.

Saeeda feels strongly about women empowerment. “I am passionate about education and empowering women to come out and stand up and do what they excel in and I am keen to partner with relative like-minded people or an organisation to do something in this area as well. Work has already begun for the Mainstage event that will be hosted in October in London this year. This planning takes about nine months so it’s literally like having a baby. A lot of planning and detailing go into this and all hairdressers from the UK and worldwide come to this event. As the saying goes, The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today’.”

“That’s exactly what we, at Toni&Guy Karachi, are trying to give the best cuts and colour, with simple styling to create maximum impact for all our clients out there,” signs off Saeeda Mandviwalla.
