A teacher is someone who not only imparts knowledge to the students but also plays an important part in inculcating values and morals in them. Sadly however, commercialization has taken over our education sector where teachers and students are bound to follow a certain curriculum, which limits them to acquire innovative ways of learning. Keeping this pressing situation in mind, recently, a new learning initiative, ‘Badal Do’ - to train teachers all over Sindh - has been launched by a consortium of seven organizations in Karachi. This yearlong project is all about changing the mindset of teachers rather than providing them skill based training and also focuses on altering the way students are being taught.

About the initiative:

They aim to engage with teachers from a cross section of the society and equip them with tools for inclusive learning in order to foster plurality, inclusion, peace and tolerance in the society, and good civic sense. It brings an array of activities that are planned for teachers’ training in a productive way. It includes learning through travelogues; citizen journalism; theatre and songs; radio shows; a social cafe where trainees will be given a chance to interact with like minded people; exhibitions to showcase teaching tools through documentaries; and last but not least, ‘Badal Do talks’ for sharing experiences. Moreover, the best part is that these activities will keep on evolving as the campaign grows. Regarding the goals of this initiative, Imran Azhar, CEO of AZ Corp Entertainment said, “In order to change people’s mindsets, you need to change the way you think - the genesis of this programme. I have never been associated with education but my transformation is the sole reason that I am supporting this cause today.”

The 7 stakeholders who have joined hands to assist and support the campaign include Teachers’ Resource Centre (TRC); Children’s Museum for Peace and Human Rights; Society for International Education (SIE); The School of writing (TSW); MIND MAP Communications; AZ Corp Entertainment and Pakistan American Cultural Centre (PACC).

The launch:

Now coming back to the launch, it was attended by many school teachers who will act as change makers by taking the benefits to at least 10,000 students through this yearlong programme. During the event all the partners had an open discussion with the attendees through a question & answer session. They also spoke at length about the campaign activities and regarded them as a proper channel for teachers to learn and make their students do better in academics and in their personal lives as a whole. Wait there is more! At the launch, Shallum Xavier, Khurram Iqbal and Alicia Dias performed the Badal Do Anthem and theatre group ZAHRSSS presented a motivational play that carried the gist of this thoughtful initiative.

The programme seems to be a step forward in the right direction. Let’s wait and see what the outcome will be...
