Women love perfumes. This Week You! takes a look at the launching ceremony of a new fragrance in town...

Oh!you smell so good

We cannot imagine ourselves going out without wearing perfume. The very word perfume evokes one’s romantic side. It gives an instant boost to one’s self esteem when someone close to your heart, whispers in your ear, ‘you smell good darling’.

Women have been using perfumes, oils and unguents since centuries. The early Egyptians used perfumed balms as part of religious ceremonies and later as part of pre love making preparations. The late 19th century was the first real era of perfume as we know it when new scents were created because of advances in organic chemistry knowledge.Oh!you smell so good

gilrl2France became a centre for flower and herb growing for the perfume industry. But it was only in the 20th century that scents and designer perfumes were really mass produced. Before that, the few trade names that existed were Coty and Yardley who made fairly light scents with familiar smells.

New designer scents were marketed fiercely in the ‘80s. Obsession from Calvin Klein, Jean Paul Gaultier and Giorgio Beverley Hills were dominant in the market. Lou Lou launched in 1987 was a refreshing subtle change from the more oppressive oriental scents. Some scents of the era like Yves St Laurent’s wonderful rose with violets in Paris have become true classics.

New era, new perfume:

The House of Bvlgari launched its latest fragrance, ‘Goldea’, with great fanfare recently. The fragrance is inspired by gold and light and the name ‘Goldea’ means ‘Gold Goddess’, deriving from the English word ‘gold’ and the Latin word ‘dea’ for female deity.

The composition of the new perfume was developed by renowned ‘nose’ and perfume creator Alberto Morillas and is oriental in essence - floral, bold heavy with musk. The heart includes golden musk, ylang-ylang and jasmine. The base features accords of velvety musk, amber, patchouli and Egyptian papyrus. One of the best features of Goldea is that it has 18-24 hour longevity due to the musks and average sillage. Morillas developed this new Eau de Parfum to complement the Bvlgari style and transport wearers to a golden age.  There is no perfumer who uses the various synthetic musks better than M. Morillas and the result is a very distinct, instantly recognizable scent. Victoria Secret model Isabeli Fontana is the face of the fragrance. Fontana, who is famous for her luxurious look and stylish ways, is an ideal choice to represent the Brand. We at the News! found the scent a little too sweet, but its overall reception has been quite positive.

The essence of this scent, however, does call to mind Cleopatra. The new fragrance represents the beginning of a new collection, more than 10 years after the last collection ‘Omnia’ was launched by the luxury brand.

The launch:

Oh!you smell so goodThe fragrance was unveiled through a fashion show, organized by Multitech, who hold the franchise, followed by dinner and dance. In line with the whole ‘gold’ theme, Multitech accented the decor and design of the launch event, held recently in Karachi, with the perfume’s colours, look and feel.Oh!you smell so good

The fashion show was more of a perfume presentation with female models coming onto the dance floor one by one or paired with a male model, showing the perfume. The alluring outfits were created by Moazzam Abbasi while the choreography was done by Rana Asif. The show was quite entertaining and it certainly revved up the crowd which featured club members, celebrities, fashion designers, journalists and high society. “We wanted to take both fashion and scent in Pakistan to a more sensual level. We also wanted the show to be enjoyable and create excitement for our guests,” stated Mohsin Feroze, CEO of Multitech whose Scentsation stores distribute and sell the fragrance. Spotted in the audience were Deepak Perwani, Nadia Hussain Khan, Behroze Sabzwari, Faisal Qureshi, Maheen Khan, Faakhir Mehmood, Moammar Rana, Rizwanullah, Imran Kureshi, German Consul General Rainer Schmiedchen, Saba Pervaiz, Nida Yasir, Yasir Nawaz, Zhalay Sarhadi, Nadya Mistry and Muzna Ibrahim.

Tips for wearing perfumeOh!you smell so good

Apply the perfume on body points such as the inside of your elbow, back of your knees, wrist, neck and cleavage where the perfume stays warmer longer. Do not simply apply to the neck Spraying a little into the air is also good if you walk straight into the perfume. This helps to diffuse it over your body. Apply the fragrance starting on your lower body working your way up to the top.

Consider layering perfumes - use all the same fragrance in various products. Begin with shower or bath gel and then rub in body lotion or spray with a matching after bath spray. Finally apply the scent preferably as Perfume or Eau de Perfume.

Try to choose perfumes that suit you, not your friends or family. Test a perfume in a store and then walk around for a minimum of ten minutes. Some perfumes take more like half an hour or an hour to truly develop.

Put a few drops of perfume onto an oil burner to scent your bedroom.
