Here are some highlights from the workshop on corporate finesse recently held at SZABIST, Karachi.

“Conflicts usually arise when expectations aren’t met; goals aren’t clear; there are differences over interpretation of goals.

“Our focus should be on dialogue rather than on debate while dealing with conflicts. In debate, we are only thinking about winning and finding loopholes in someone else’s work whereas in dialogue, we’re trying to receive feedback from someone else and our mind isn’t focusing on negative points.

“The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Instrument Model states that we have to be careful about two things: focus on your goal and your relationship with the other party. Their five approaches are avoidance, accomodation, compromise, competition and collaboration.”

Managing Emotions and Conflicts

Zeeshan Khan, Funverks Global

“I am often asked what it takes to succeed. I always respond to it with:

(1) Luck; keep on persisting and trying; what you achieve is the direct result of the efforts you put in.

(2) Your aptitude; if you’re not skilled in something and doing it forcefully, you will not be able to compete with those to whom it comes naturally.

(3) Passion to excel; there is no subsitute to that. You have to understand your strengths before you start building your career.

How to Lead a Successful Career

Ruhail Muhammad, Hub Power Holding Ltd.

“How many of you are working on making a good first impression? Each one of you, right! “Etiquettes aren’t restricted to a meeting or a business dinner; these are what define you as an individual.

“How you eat, how you behave around the table, and with the food is connected to who you are as a human.”

Dinning Etiquettes

Zohra Omar, Mentoring Hub

“It is quite unfortunate but you can’t ignore the fact that they you’re always being judged on the basis of your appearance. Appearance is a major part of your non-verbal communication and must be given due importance in personal and professional life.

“Through mastering image engineering you can really groom yourself in the right way. It’s just like an actor transforming him/herself for a particular role.

“For example, if you’re preparing for an interview and you want to look good for the job, think about how you want to be seen by the interviewers. One technique is to describe the desired image in five words and then start thinking about how to achieve it.”

Personal Grooming

Lubna Lakhani, Raintree Spa

“Budgeting helps you prepare for emergencies and ensures you don’t spend money you don’t have.

“In case, you don’t have money, planning in advance gives you an early warning sign and helps to determine how much debt you can afford.

“When you plan, you know what you are going to achieve. Of course, there will be unforseen situations, but at least you will not have any regrets.

Personal Budgeting in Turbulent Times

Mustafa Hussain, Asiatic Public Relations

  • Skills you’re not good at; if you don’t speak French fluently, don’t mention it.
  • Personal statement.
  • CGPA or division.

“Things you should have in your CV:

  • Internships, if you’re fresh grads.
