  • Born on 4th May 1929 in Brussels, Belgium.
  • Her father later added “Hepburn” to his name, mistakenly believing that he descended from Duke James Hepburn, changing his last name to “Hepburn-Ruston”.
  • Had a privileged childhood.
  • Family lost their fortune during World War II; suffered from malnutrition during the war.
  • Took ballet lessons in her youth before moving her attention to acting.
  • Started performing as a chorus girl in theatre productions in the late 1940s before getting minor television and film roles in the early 1950s.
  • Shot to stardom after starring in Roman Holiday (1953), receiving numerous awards for the performance; went on to star in a number of successful films, such as Sabrina (1954), The Nun’s Story (1959), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Charade (1963), My Fair Lady (1964), and Wait Until Dark (1967).
  • Subsequently appeared in fewer films, devoting much of her later life to UNICEF.
  • Married twice, first to Mel Ferrer (from 1954 to 1968; divorced; 1 son, born in 1960), and then to Andrea Dotti (1969 to 1982; divorced; 1 son, born 1970).
  • Could speak Dutch, English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
  • Died of appendix cancer in Switzerland on 20th January 1993.
