I have weight issues

Salaam Guru,

Every week I wait impatiently to read Us magazine especially your column. I am a 22-year-old girl and belong to a well off family. I have done my graduation. I am not interested working anywhere so I am basically home these days. My parents intend to marry me off this year only. I am getting many proposals as I happen to be a beautiful girl. I have this proposal from a very well-known family. The guy is well-settled in Dubai and is good looking. When he visited us with his family, we clicked instantly and our families got along well. He has gone back to Dubai and will come in August again for our engagement. We are in touch via email and Facebook as he wants to know me a bit before we get officially engaged. Our parents have no objection on that. Everything is going smooth Guru but there is a hitch - my weight. I am bit on a plump side. I am not fat but I am not slim either. Actually, I am a foodie and it’s hard for me to resist delectable food. On the other hand, K (my fiance-to-be) is very health conscious. He goes to gym regularly. He has advised me to watch out my weight and that I should join a gym. He wants me to see in a better shape when he comes in August. Guru, it’s already May. I don’t know how I am going to lose weight in just two months. I also want to look smart and I am kind of falling in love with K. I want K to find me attractive. I am thinking of going on a strict diet. What do you suggest?

Anxious Bride

 Dear Anxious Bride,

You are already blessed with a pretty face. You are only worried about your weight and it is not a big issue that cannot be handled. It is in your hands to control it. If you want to live a happy and healthy life, then you ought to manage your weight. Don’t lose weight for K; your health should be the primary reason.

First, you need to make up your mind. Start with simple steps. We’ve all heard the advice: if we want to lose weight, we need to eat less and move more. So, joining a gym is a good idea to keep you on track. Actually, summer is the best time to lose weight.  However, don’t go for strict diets. Many of these diets are unrealistic. Some people may not be able to afford the specific ingredients, while others find it difficult to prepare them. Not only are they unrealistic, but they’re incredibly bad for your health in the long run. I am talking about the diets that restrict the intake of food and essential nutrients. As soon as you stop these diets, you tend to put on weight. So, it’s better to do what you can do comfortably. For instance, stay away from all bakery items (too oily) and junk food (too many calories). Make sure you eat a balanced diet - based on proteins, minerals, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates.

Drink water. Say hello to fresh fruits and vegetables. Switch to green tea and whole grains (for example, brown bread, oatmeal). Include low-fat products and lean protein in your meals.

Consuming a variety of food will keep you motivated; just keep your portions small and spread them over the day.

So, with balanced diet and exercise you will see amazing results in just two months. Good luck!

What gift should I give to my mom?

Dear Guru,

I am an 18-year-old girl. I study in college. I belong to a middle class family. I am lucky to have affectionate parents. Guru, I want to express my love for my mother; she does so much for me and I was confused what to get her on Mother’s Day this year even though there were so many sales and discounts going on. I didn’t want to give her typical gifts like flowers, perfumes or chocolates. Can you please help me in getting something nice for her?

Caring Daughter

 Dear Caring Daughter,

If you really care about your mother and want to do something for her on Mother’s Day, then my suggestion is to not go for fancy gifts. Mothers give more importance to emotions than materialistic things. So, you can surprise her by making her a lavish breakfast or lunch.  This little gesture of yours will make her truly happy.

 Good luck!
