Epic of Gilgamesh
The Epic is one of the earliest types of poetry, which consists of a long narrative and includes many heroic actions. The oldest epic poem is the Epic of Gilgamesh from ancient Mesopotamia (written c. 2150-1400 BCE). It pre-dates Homer’s writing by 1500 years and, therefore, stands as the oldest piece of epic western literature. In it, we have the story of a king, Gilgamesh, who was half-god, half-man.
Billet doux
By Suhd Nazeer
Imagine a firecracker
bursting vividly wide
Eclipsing rays of the night,
That’s your smile.
Imagine a fruit
mellow and pining away
in a far off orchard old,
That’s me without you.
In your loving memory
By Vaheid Khizarr
In the joyous meadows of life
When he was terrified
By the cruelties of the so called
love and trust...
You came from nowhere
And held his soul tight
The bitterness in his every breath
Dissolved into
A rich laughter of solace
The warmth of your presence around him
Evaporated
The painful tears of his agony
The power of your soothing words
Consoled every sorrow of his past
Then one day
in the same joyous meadows of life
when he was putrefied
by the sincerity of your pure love
you left and dragged
that poor soul
back in the same dark moonless night
Which perhaps has…
No dawn to come
But
Countless moments
Of your loving memory!
Remember
By Minahil Omar
Our days of glory are over
Our castles and palaces have tumbled over
Leaving only ruins
All have fled
As war has begun
The dark days have come
Leaving terror
But all shall keep hope
As the bright days surrender
To music and laughter
Colour and happiness
For all to remember
Fraction of a second
By Bariyah Faisal
The colours of rainbow
fade in front of her eyes
The earth trembles beneath
her feet
The beauty of his eyes
disappear instantly
And her life crumbles
in a fraction of a second.
Heaven
By Ibbrar
In the search of heaven
And the greed of hoors
I climbed to seven.
Angles threw me back
And tell, O boor!
Thy heart itself a heaven
I don’t ask you
By Fareeha Manzoor
I don’t ask you
To walk the distances with me
To climb the heights with me
To follow my thoughts blindly
I only ask you
To share my madness with me
My life is a melody
And I want to flow like waves
Rising and falling
On the symphony of my beating heart
I want to step lightly
Delicately
And caper and spring
My life is a melody
And I want you to waltz with me
My mind is thirsty and soul parched
So, let them soak and soak them all
The dazzling beams of heavenly light
My ears crave sweetness
Oh, let them drink and deeply on
The sweet tunes and jingling noise
I was so caught up
In this world
Now, let me lose myself
In the strange music of this universe
And move my feet on it.
My heart is so young
It throbs with the song of the world
And I only ask you
To lose yourself
come and show your madness
savour this ecstasy
And be my madness with me
