Dear Editor,
“Prickly perfection” by Hissam Ali in today’s Us (18 April issue) presents an engaging overview of a popular trend, but it overlooks some important concerns. While the aesthetic and low-maintenance appeal of these plants is well-argued, the piece fails to address the environmental risks of overharvesting wild succulents and the carbon footprint of mass production for global markets. Moreover, it would have been more balanced if the author had included voices of experts or critics to provide perspective.
I am a fan of Poets’ Corner. I think it is one of the most popular sections of Us magazine. It gives young writers a voice, and a chance for readers like me to read beautifully written poetry. I was especially moved by “The quiet corners” by Syeda Maqsoom. Her poem captures the quiet ache of unspoken love and the consequent heartbreak. Ayesha Alam’s "So called togetherness” about vulnerability of relationships was also beautifully written.
Please continue featuring the works of our enterprising young poets and writers. It means a lot to many of us.

Deforestation – a serious threat
Dear Editor,
The widespread cutting down of trees, known as deforestation, poses a serious threat to our world today. This issue is especially alarming in light of the growing global population, which increases the demand for land and natural resources. As a result, vast numbers of trees are being cleared to make space for housing, industrial development, and to meet the high demand for wood, particularly in furniture manufacturing.
The environmental consequences of deforestation are profound. It intensifies global warming by reducing the Earth’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. Additionally, fewer trees mean less oxygen production—essential for maintaining the planet’s temperature balance. Deforestation also contributes to rising pollution levels, disrupts fragile ecosystems, and endangers countless plant and animal species.
It is crucial that we take urgent and decisive steps to stop the indiscriminate cutting of trees. At the same time, we must commit to reforestation by planting more trees to replenish lost forests and counteract the harmful effects of deforestation. This is not only an environmental concern but a vital step toward securing the health and future of our planet and all its living beings. The time to act is now.
