1A - Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
As they prepared for the movie To Have and Have Not (1944), Humphrey Bogart tried to ease Lauren Bacall's first-movie jitters by telling her he had looked at her screen test and they would have a lot of fun together. Married in 1945, they became Hollywood legend by staying together.
2 D - Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz
Lucy and her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, starred in the series from 1951 to 1957. She had worked her way from vaudeville to television, marrying Desi along the way. He was a band leader from Cuba and toured with his band while she worked in radio. When the chance came for her to try television, she insisted he be part of the cast.
3 D - Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
Known as “Joltin’ Joe” or “The Yankee Clipper”, Joe DiMaggio played his entire 13-year major league career with the New York Yankees. Marilyn Monroe was an actress in some high-profile films in the 1950s. The marriage lasted less than one year.
4 D - George Burns and Gracie Allen
George Burns and Gracie Allen worked their way up the vaudeville ladder in the late 1920s and were then picked up as a comedy team for movies by Paramount Pictures. Their television fame started in 1950 and continued through 1958. Gracie became ill with heart disease and died in 1964. George died in 1996 at age 100.
5 A - Johnny Cash and June Carter
Johnny Cash was one of the first rockabilly singers; June Carter was a daughter of the legendary Carter family country musicians. Each had a previous marriage before they got together. They were married for 35 years before she died in May, 2003 and he in September of that year.
6 D - Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy met on the set of Woman of the Year (1941). They were attracted to each other and soon began a clandestine affair (though many people knew about it) which lasted until his death in 1967. Tracy was a Roman Catholic and since his wife Louise would not ask for a divorce, he would not go against the precepts of his religion.
7 B - Christopher Reeve and Dana Morosini
Christopher Reeve starred in four Superman movies and several other movies and television programmes. Horseback riding in 1995, he was thrown and suffered a cervical spinal injury, becoming a quadriplegic as a result. He lobbied on behalf of people with spinal cord injuries until his death of cardiac arrest in 2004.
Dana Morosini Reeve had guest roles on Law & Order, All My Children and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She was also a singer and talk show host. She married Christopher Reeve in Massachusetts in 1992. In 2005, she announced that although she had never smoked cigarettes, she had lung cancer. She died in 2006.
8 A - Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
After ten years of marriage to Kidman, Tom Cruise filed for divorce. They have two adopted children. He has been married three times, she twice. They both have long, successful film careers.
9 D - Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of Cleopatra in 1963. She played the title role, he played Mark Antony. Besides being a film for which both were remembered it was also the most expensive movie made up to that point: 40-million U.S. dollars.
They were wed in 1964, and divorced in 1974. Thinking they made a mistake, they re-wed in 1975 but were divorced again in 1976. Both did some of their best film work after they got married (the first time). Both were married several times over their lifetimes. He died in 1984, she in 2011.
10 A - Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward knew each other before acting in The Long, Hot Summer in 1957 when they fell in love. Both were Academy Award winners. They appeared in eleven films together. The Newmans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008; he died later that year.
