Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s Sherlock can rejoice as the soon-to-be-released special is set to make an appearance on January 2. But, according to reports, the special will have little to do with the current plotline of the super hit TV series co-created by Mark Gatiss.

A report in the News.com.au states, “Unlike the previous nine installments, Sherlock: The Abominable Wife will be set in the original Holmesian era, Victorian England. It will also exist outside of the Sherlock canon, meaning the events of this episode will have no bearing on, or connection to anything, that’s happening in the regular series.”

In other words, Sherlock and Watson will be living in the London of 1895. This means no cell phones and Internet and certainly no blog. And as the airing date comes closer, it’s been revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock in the hit series was initially not convinced of this time-travel aberration.

‘I thought they’d finally lost the plot, jumped the shark, all the other clichés of television gone mad with itself,” Benedict is quoted saying in the UK’s Daily Mail.

“Then they expanded the idea and pitched it to me properly and I think it’s fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. To muck around with a pipe and deerstalker for real is wonderful. Then there’s the setting, the scenery, all the rest of it, it’s just a delight. It always is with period drama.”

Moving away from the deviation, the anticipated fourth season is not only on the cards but work on it has already begun. “I just finished [writing] episode 1,” said Gatiss in an interview.

The third season screened way back in 2014 ended with the strange comeback of Sherlock’s ultimate nemesis, Moriarty, played to perfection by Andrew Scott. Shooting for the show begins next year and while the creator is still not giving away scoop on the new season, he did tell EW: “All I can say is, this is a major, life-changing series for the regulars. The repercussions of Moriarty’s apparent return are far-reaching. It’s very big stuff.”
