Only a few days ago, director and producer Karan Johar announced his film Takht, which is an epic period drama and features the likes of Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Janhvi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar in pivotal roles.

In a recent interview, Karan Johar revealed that the film is set in the Mughal era and is about warring brothers. “It’s history. It’s about two warring brothers and is based on facts as we know them. Beyond that, it’s too early to say anything.”

While Karan said that he is scared about making Takht, he has also called it his biggest film to date and that it is a bit like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G).

“Yes, opulence-wise and scale-wise, it’s my biggest to date. It’s scary and nerve- wracking. I’m scared every minute of the day. The announcement shook me up. I’m really petrified. It’s not the scale. It’s also the relationship dynamics,” the filmmaker revealed. “It’s like the K3G of the Mughal era. But it’s more extreme, there is more betrayal. It has the tropes of court politics. It’s so rich in texture.”

The director, who is known for larger-than-life family dramas such as K3G, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name is Khan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, also spoke of the inevitable comparisons with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and said, “I love Sanjay’s aesthetic. The comparison scares me but I hope I can find my own voice.”

Takht is scheduled to release in 2020.
