On the occasion of their 50th production, Salt Arts not only produced a show (held last month) featuring the great Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami and Sons, but also managed to rope in Zeb Bangash, who is a disciple of Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami. She introduced him before he took the stage and spoke at length about the beautiful relationship between a disciple and a teacher and how it changed her personally and professionally.

“Having been under his tutelage for five years now, I have come to realise that Jaan is not simply a maestro of his art form, but an institution in himself, the ‘source’ of an ancient classical music form — created by his forefathers with Amir Khusro, eight centuries ago — called Khayal,” Zeb said during her introduction.

Speaking to Instep about partnering with not just Saami sahab (who is known as Jaan), but Zeb as well, Sara Nisar, manager arts and production at Salt Arts noted, “Zeb is one of his (Ustad Naseeruddin Saaami) students and throughout this campaign she was in touch with us, she would tell us about Ustaad sahab and his journey, their work together and when we spoke to the Ustaad sahab, for us he’s an Ustaad as well, he’s educating us and we thought it would be very interesting to bring one of his students to do his introduction, to tell the people how she sees him and what their relationship is.”
