Kopykats’ upcoming theatre production, spearheaded by Dawar Mehmood, has been written by veteran actor-writer Sajid Hasan and is all set to premiere in Peshawar next month.
When it comes to commercial theatre, Dawar Mehmood is one person who has consistently delivered. With acclaimed productions like Pawnay 14 August, Sawa 14 August, Aangan Terha, Siachen and the most recent Bananistan under his belt, he has made theatre an entertaining experience for audiences across the country. Those who find it thrilling to watch actors live on stage and enjoy Mehmood’s work in particular can rejoice as the artist is gearing up for another upcoming project, titled Hua Kuch Yoon.
While all of his earlier scripts were written by the legendary Anwar Maqsood, except Bananistan, this particular play has been penned by veteran actor-writer Sajid Hasan. The press meet of the play took place at Karachi Arts Council earlier this week with Dawar Mehmood, Sajid Hasan and Anwar Maqsood in attendance.
“The biggest challenge that I enjoyed most while working with Sajad Hasan was his attention to detail,” Dawar shared at the press event. “You can’t make him write anything until and unless he is convinced and you prove things to him logically. It took us two years to agree upon a common idea; before we kept on arguing over the concept and other things.”
The director also explained that Hua Kuch Yoon, set against an Indo-Pak background, features 35 actors and most of them are new to the field. The play will run across the country for seven months. Beginning from Peshawar on November 22, it will head to multiple cities before finally concluding with a spell in Karachi in April 2018.
Hua Kuch Yoon is 90- minute long and throughout the presentation on stage, the set will be modified around 9-10 times which is the real challenge for the director and entire team.
Anwar Maqsood, who has collaborated with Mehmood on six occasions, was also present at the event. Though he is not involved with Hua Kuch Yoon, he came to support the team.
Sajid Hasan, also present on this occasion, noted his gratitude on being attached to the project and spoke about the importance of theatre. “We still haven’t understood that theatre is a vital organ of creative fields,” he stressed. “Most of our budding actors, writers, directors and producers begin their journey from the world of theatre. Despite that theatre has been neglected considerably and we need to support young people like Dawar [Mehmood]. I would want you all to support us. Dawar, in collaboration with Anwar bhai, has brought people back to theatre and I am obliged to take this role and further the cause.”
Speaking about Hua Kuch Yoon, the writer said that it is eventually a love story but it is a very unique and symbolic one. According to the play’s poster, it follows a love tale between a Pakistani boy and an Indian girl and also takes into account the pre and post partition era.
Currently the entire cast is rehearsing for the play in Peshawar where the first show is scheduled to take place on the 22nd of November.
