Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal became India’s highest grossing film ever and broke all previous records at the box office but the film had no place in the recently held IIFA Awards 2017. Post the ceremony, fans of the star and the film raised questions on the credibility of the popular award show for not nominating Dangal in any of the categories.

Responding to the flak they received, IIFA organizers issued a statement saying that the filmmakers didn’t submit the project for consideration in the first place.

“So basically, in IIFA, forms are sent to various production houses,” the statement reads. “They fill those forms up and send it back to us. Those forms are then put out to the industry for voting and from there it becomes a nomination. Dangal has not sent their entry in. We would love Dangal to be a part of it. I think it’s a movie that’s broken all records. We love Aamir Khan and the two little girls. They did a great job. But unfortunately, they didn’t send their entry in. We feel sad.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is a biopic sports-drama about Mahavir Phogat and his two daughters – Geeta Phogat (essayed brilliantly by Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita Kumari (played by Sanya Malhotra).
