The first half of the year has passed us by and what stands out prominently are the number of songs sung by Atif Aslam that have featured in Indian films. Having lent his voice to Hindi Medium that marked Saba Qamar’s Bollywood debut earlier this year with the song ‘Hoor’, Aslam has lent his voice to the Pepsi campaign in recent weeks as well as several Bollywood films like Tubelight, Sweetie Weds NRI and Raabta.

In the case of Tubelight, the new Salman Khan film, Aslam has sung a song called ‘Main Agar’ and though it captures Aslam on his usual singing scale, it just doesn’t have enough weight to surpass previous Bollywood hits by Aslam such as ‘Tere Bin’, ‘Pehli Nazar’ and ‘Bheegi Yaadein’.  On Sweetie Weds NRI, Aslam has sung a tune called ‘Musafir’ that is neither here nor there. He is also featured on the soundtrack of Raabta, a Bollywood film starring Sushant Singh Rajput, and Kriti Sanon that released earlier this month. On the soundtrack of Raabta, Aslam has sung ‘Darasal’ which is also not too inventive.

What Aslam needs beyond corporate gigs and Bollywood projects is a reinvention of his sound. While the pop king did attempt to write a song this year with the release of ‘Younhi’ that he composed and wrote lyrics for, none of these songs have the music aesthetic that is needed by Aslam to elevate his music to another level because a lot of these tracks blend into one another. Time to change the game.
