Hollywood is not amused by the current occupant of The White House, President Donald Trump. The most recent example of this disdain emerged at a ceremony where Robert De Niro called Trump “mean-spirited”.

The living legend of cinema slammed President Donald Trump while accepting an award honouring his career. “I don’t make movies for rich liberal elites,” Robert De Niro said while accepting the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theatre. “I’ve got my restaurants for that. I make them for everybody.”

De Niro, the award’s 44th recipient, was making a point though as the Trump administration is targeting (read: eliminating) arts programs “for their own divisive political purposes.”

The acting legend also noted that the namesake of his award, Charlie Chaplin, was “an immigrant who probably wouldn’t pass today’s ‘extreme vetting’. I hope we’re not keeping out the next Chaplin.”

Referencing the Trump reaction to Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech, Niro said: “By being here tonight, you are supporting arts for everyone.  You’re supporting the slapstick of Charlie Chaplin, the great body of work of Marty Scorsese and Barry Levinson, the dumb-ass comedies of Robert De Niro, the ‘overrated performances of Meryl Streep’ and your own taste and needs.”

Apart from this award, there are also rumours that Niro could be collaborating with Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese for a crime-based film. Time will tell if it actually happens but with these names attached, it could make for a fabulous film. Watch out.
