It’s all eyes on Mahira Khan these days and she certainly has stolen the limelight with Raees and her undeniably strong chemistry with Shah Rukh Khan. Though Khan cannot be part of the film’s promotional tour, given the ongoing rift between Pakistan and India, Raees promotions are in full swing and it is being anticipated as a film that will take the box office by storm.

In a recent interview (two weeks before the release of Raees) with BBC Urdu, the popular actress shares how special Raees is and how she’s handling the situation that is keeping her away from the spotlight despite the fact that she is making more than a strong imprint in her Bollywood debut.

“I have given two years to this film [Raees],” Khan spoke to veteran journalist Fifi Haroon in the interview. “Though I have put my heart in other films too, this one is very special to me. I have worked outside of my country. Films that I grew up watching, the actor [Shah Rukh Khan] I dreamt about, I got the opportunity to work with. Of course I wish I could be there to promote the film and talk more about it but this is something which is not in my control.”

While it was argued that Karan Johar made some changes to Fawad Khan’s role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, this doesn’t appear to be the case with Mahira Khan in Raees. She is quite visible in the poster, trailer as well as the songs.

“I’m very happy and thankful that I’m a part of this film as much as it was narrated initially and this is what matters the most to me,” shared Khan, who’s nervous as the film is just two weeks away from its release. “People will see my work, be it small or big. It’s my biggest wish that the film releases peacefully, people like it and it becomes a huge success.”

Making a debut in Bollywood alongside SRK and having a strong screen presence has put Mahira at the top of the celebrity food chain. If the situation was favourable, this would have paved the way for some great opportunities for her in India. When asked if she feels this comes as a hurdle in her growth, she responded that she never thinks about how it’s going to affect her career.

“The past year has taught me that life is extremely unpredictable, whether it’s your personal life or your professional growth.

Shoaib [Mansoor] sahab called me sometime around May-June last year, the situation was different at that time, but I had decided that I’ll do his film among other films that were offered to me at the time.”

While we are still not sure if Raees will release in Pakistan, the film is expected to come out on January 25 in India. We hope 2017 turns out to be another great year for Mahira who is all set to make a mark with Raees and has also started shooting for her next Pakistani film, Verna – directed by Shoaib Mansoor.
