Despite Benedict Cumberbatch’s presence as Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness, fans didn’t love the film as much as its predecessor, the rebooted Star Trek by J.J Abrams.  But the third film in the franchise just might lead to some redemption. For one thing, Abrams will not direct the film. While Abrams is still serving as producer, Fast and Furious 5 and 6 director - Justin Lin will replace him in the director’s chair.

Equally important is Simon Pegg’s involvement with the franchise. Not only is he returning in the third outing as Scotty but is also responsible for co-writing the film, a task that Pegg describes as a “terrifying responsibility”.

The film will see the SS Enterprise embark on a five-year mission, and the team is forced to abandon their ship after being attacked by aliens and find themselves stranded on an unknown planet with a new enemy upon them.

Of course, the film, which releases on July 22, could find itself pushed out of theatres early if fans don’t approve as has been the case with recent sequels this year.

Star Trek Beyond also features Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov, who passed away at the age of 27 earlier this year.

The soundtrack, meanwhile, will feature Rihanna’s new single, ‘Sledgehammer’.
